RSS Challenge CarloCab Vs GatherSuccess

bloggingrssbattle copy

I was speaking to Carlocab recently and I thought it would be fun to start a RSS Challenge. We decided to challenge each other how much more RSS subscriptions we can increase within a month.

Here’s The Stats For Both Blogs Current:

Carlocab – 2928 Subscribers
GatherSuccess – 812 Subscribers

This challenge will start today on the 250808 and will end on 250908. The winner will be counted based on the amount been increase through out this period. Some rules we decided on was no blackhat tactics were allow, which I dont think there will be any because I dont like black hat tactics too :P

So if you can do click here to subscribe to me blog:)

What Is A RSS ( Real Simple Syndication) ?

The orange logo that you see on your left is what we call a RSS button which is normally used to get subscribers to subscribe to your blog site.

Used mainly to publish a summary or all your entries in your blog to be updated to your readers via a RSS reader, it also helps you to give your readers a new medium to read your blog.

How Is RSS Important On Your Blog?

In the past, I used to only focus on getting opt-in from my blog but what I slowly realized quite late was that RSS was also another important element in blogging.

Not only does it help your readers to access your blog from RSS readers, it also been used as a tool to show your readers that you have a huge base of readers on your blog.

In some advertising networks, RSS Reader count also plays an important role to determine the price for your advertisement rates. So the higher the amount of count you have the higher you can charge for your advertisement on your blog.

Do Not Display Your RSS Count If It’s Below 100

If you have just started blogging, please do not display your RSS count number until you have reached at least 100 subscribers as you do not want to give your readers an impression there is no one reading your blog :)

@ Rumah (and others who wonder, what’s the point?). I’m hoping Alvin will give some carefully thought out answers, but I’m not holding my breath.

these RSS contest things were verypopular a few months ago with the ‘big guys’ and now they almost seem to be raching down into the next tier of bloggers as a ‘me too’ kind of thing. Posts and information here have been in short supply for several months now as Alvin ha sbeen devoting his time to travel rather thna blogging … I was hoping that when he got back from his summer on the road we would gte some more ‘meat’ in the sandwhich.

Subscribing by email is actually a much better way to read blogs that interest me, and FireFoz or Internet Explorer live bookmarks are even better. RSS readers are actually ‘last decade’ stuff, resurrected by bloggers who want to use the numbers as a bragging tool (or a sales tool to make buyer’s think their blog has a higher value. The current pitch of RSS subscriptions is like many other trends of the ‘Net, things are so old they once again look new to the next generation of users … a ‘generation’ on the ‘Net appears to be only a few years.

Anyway, food for some comments in a post or two, Alvin, if you are actually thinking of providing some value.

In my opinion only, the particular sites chosen here are a poor mtchas well. A contest like this makes sense between equals, but carl Ocab is so much higher in subscriptions alreaedy and ranks so much higher for MMO keywords that it’s like an independent used car lot and a hige mercedes dealer ‘partnering’. Percentage-wise the ‘big guy’ stands to gain a lot more than the challeneger, no matter how hard the challenger works.

      Hey Dave,

Thanks for your kind comments… RSS Count maybe a old thing for some but it’s still the most basic thing any blogger need to build upon.

I think the biggest mistake I did was I was focusing too much on email subscribers via my newsletter that I forgot about my RSS subscribers count :(

If you realized the readers on the internet now most often determine how popular a blog is through the count of readers :)

Carlocab may be have a higher MMO keyword but it does not matter because this challege is about how much increase in RSS can we get in a period of time :)

Wow, interesting challenge! Hopefully there will be some secret tips to be revealed here on how both of you achieve the goal, after we find out who’s the winner:)

I didn’t realize the importance of RSS, because I think when I like a blog, I just subscribe it by receiving its posting into my email, for me it’s more practical. However, it seems there are tendencies that most readers prefer RSS.

  4. Interesting challenge. But what is the end goal? Just to have more subscribers in a given month? What’s the reward for a winner?

  5. mr.ular says:

Already done my part. Subscribed your RSS.

Btw, I thought the template you’ve provided is great and within couple of months, I have achieved my minimal target of readers and adsense earning i.e. to get back the capital I’ve invested when first starting with blog (including my investment to your e-book, etc).

    Thank you.

  6. Dave Starr says:

Great idea, Alvin, and a worthy opponent. Carl and his dad write well and always provide good, solid info.

However, something you guys with these contests should think through … what about saomething for the long-term, faithful subscriber who has been on your RSS feed for a long time?

A few months back I unsubscribed from John Chow and Shoemoney becuase because they were running a contest like this and every post, hour after hour was nothing but ‘sign up with me, sign up with me’ … it is as if they didn’t want the folks who had already become readers. I ha dbeen with both of them for ages, in John’s case from his very early days with his own blog … and all he seemed to want was more and more curiousity seekers looking for some kind of prize.

A thought to roll around anyway … getting people to sign up is one thing, getting them to stick is a different task.

  7. This could be very interesting so
    looking forward to the results.
    Doug

  8. I m already subscribed with both of your blog..lol.
    Good Luck!

  9. Louis says:

Interesting challenge… but what’s the carrot at the end of the race?

I’ve subscribed to your both too. :P
