Frank speaking…Google and other SEs doesn’t need you to understand them.

Its a game of either beat them or join them. Here your only choice is to join them and dance to their tune.

Just like what is obtainable in the macro economic environment in offline business.

I warned that changing your blog post slugs–also known as permalinks or post URLs–is to be avoided, once you’ve published your blog post.while you often hear that most blog publishing platforms are “search engine friendly” out of the box, there’s one configuration that is important when setting up a new blog: change the default way post slugs are created.

  17. This is a great article, thank you!!

  18. Dave Starr says:

Sorry I didn’t get you joke, Hrovje. That’s one of the difficulties with comment or email humor … it’s not the same as when you tell a joke face to face … you don’t get feedback that let’s you know how your meaning is being taken … and I took the bait because Alvin aims his articles at we less experienced folks, and I’ve seen so many people having trouble getting their blogs moving because they are focused on gimmicks like the follow/no-follow controversy rather than cranking out content people will enjoy. Sorry mate.

  19. Hrvoje says:

    I wrote that in irony :-);-) .

  20. Dave Starr says:

This was agood thread, many more interesting comments than many of the posts … and I find I usually learn at least as much from the comments as from the main article … more good minds at work.

It may be worthwhile chnaging your comment links to ‘follow’ but you certainly should think some things through before you just jump at that idea.

First, the only people who even know the difference between follow/no-follow are the technically sophisticated ones who are the least likely to buy anything you might be selling. If you want a hi-tech audence, of course, that’s likely not a problem.

But almost all blog posts have no page rank (the blog here is PR3 but this post is not even ranked (Google ranks pages, not sites). So a ‘follow’ from this comment will contribute exactly nothingto the future page rank of my site.

But since Alvin sells links from the front page (with page rank) it will dilute his profits, dilute his page rank and actually cut into his sales (why would I buy a link from a site that gives their links for free?

Not saying that making your links ‘follow’ is always wrong, but it is not always a smart thing. They were defaulted to ‘no-follow’ for some very good reasons … not to annoy commenters. You still get blog traffic from people following your link manualy, if you have something tosay ;-)

  21. Hrvoje says:

You will also encourage people to comment by adding do follow on your comment links :-) . Just a thought…

  22. Alvin Phang says:

Some of you guys already got the answer :) Anyway I posted a more detailed version of the answer at the article below

  23. Anita says:

    Hi Alvin

The first thing that popped into my mind was “keep it real” but I can see that Dave already said that.
One thing that is needed is quality content. It doesn’t matter how much traffic you get if the content is “no good” nobody will bother to visit again, and they definitely won’t want to recommend the site to anybody else.
So my top tip would be…. keep it real with good content that attracts/ informs and excites the readers…..keep them coming back for more :-) ….engage them and ask questions (just like you do). That’s what gets the “buzz” going.

    Anita

  24. Join and be active in popular forums would increase traffic.

  25. John says:

    Hi Alvin,

I have comment quite a bit in your blog, did i get your attention. haha. Just joking!

  26. Dave Starr says:

Here’s a ‘technique’ or a ‘best practice I recommend above all the other 14 you mentioned, Alvin … be real and interact with your readers. (and you do this well, Alvin, that’s a major reason I am here)

I see many ‘big bloggers’ who have already attained alot of success who seem to ignore their ‘small fry’ readers. This is bad business and rude, but it is, after all, only human nature.

But I see lots of small (tiny even) bloggers just starting out who don’t answer comments, don’t answer emails and don’t seem to be real people.

One thing I noticed over the past fewyears in this game … the people I read and the people I am most likely to interact with are the ones who talk to me as if I were a friend, or at least a valued customer (reader). This is a powerful techique and it costs absolutely nothing to implement.

  27. Pat says:

    Hi Alvin,

It is a very nice post BTW. Thanks.

The best blog marketing strategy in my opinion is developing a strong and very tight relationship with top bloggers in the internet and get a back link from high page rank blog.

    Hope this makes sense?

  32. Ron says:

    Good article , again.
I have a question first…how many trackbacks do you recommend for a blog post?
The most powerful tactic would be regular updates…I know my numbers are up when I make a post

  33. Simon says:

Interviewing the owner of a popular blog is a great way to get more exposure and free traffic for your blog. It can really boost your RSS subscribers as well.

  34. Wayne Brooks says:

    Hi Alvin,
Great article and great question. For my money, one of the most powerful blog marketing tactics is to conversion of blog posts into feature articles.
