How To Make Your Visitors Pay Attention To Your Blog!

Whenever visitors landed on your blog, you have only 10 seconds to convince them that your blog is worthy of their time. There are only two things you need to tell them:

1. What is your blog about?

2. How your blog will benefit them?

If you are not able to tell them effectively the purpose of your blog in 10 seconds, off they go for the next shiny thing on the Internet. Tell them about your blog in your blog title and show them what you can do for them on the sub-title or tagline. Just be creative in your own ways as long as your visitors know what your blog is about and how you can help them.

The number of new blogs is increasing at an alarming rate everyday and it is important to stand out from the crowd. You have to be different and relevant to your niche. To be become an Authority in a specific niche is the ultimate aim of every professional blogger.  If you can’t keep your visitors longer than 10 seconds to read your blog, how can you become an Authority?

Doing the above makes you think about the direction of your blog. If your blog is without a clear purpose and you keep providing loads and loads of poorly written posts, you will lose all your visitors. However, if you know the purpose of your blog clearly, it will show on every corner of your blog. Your visitors will see it and you will build trust.

Don’t try to go after huge general markets, your blog will end up looking like an overturned garbage bin. Narrowing your focus to a small, niche market gives you more advantages. People go online to find information and solutions to their problems.  You need to determine what problems they are facing and give them the clear solution on your blog.

Blogging is not a quick hit strategy of taking the money and running. It’s about building up that long-term audience and value. It’s not about putting Google Adsense on your blog, hoping new visitors will just click on the ads and money will roll into your bank. In fact, if you are following this model, you will find yourself losing interest whenever you see a big fat zero on your Adsense account.

You are building up a real asset, a business which could be earning you recurring income if you are doing it correctly. Have a correct mindset, keep your focus of helping people and then develop your blog. You should be on the right route to success.

    Hi, Alvin

    Thanks for the post.

    I love two points here:
    1. If you can’t keep your visitors longer than 10 seconds to read your blog, how can you become an Authority?
    2. Blogging is not a quick hit strategy of taking the money and running. It’s about building up that long-term audience and value.

Still a lot of things I’ll need to learn.

    Hi Richard,

    Thanks for your comments.

The problem of knowing exactly what your niche is not only tricky but a huge topic for those who want to have professional blogs.

From your comments, i gathered that you have found the purpose and direction of your blog after “walking the ground” …

Congrats! :) You are ahead of many…

Hi Louis, Being informative in a specific niche is the final result I believe after testing an array of topics and information. In the beginning of my blog experience (starting at big fat zero) choosing a domain name is something that has to be done correctly. The problem is knowing exactly what your niche is , can be tricky at first and I must admit I have learned more about setting up a proper blog than I did. Its like learning to drive a car , if you dont have a car to drive then how are you to learn. So I buy the car and then learn how to drive it. That’s the way I do things which maybe different for others. I would also like to add that at times when I do read other blog posts I do take a tour of the links and other banner sites as variety in these can be useful for reference sites that have later become handy.

  4. Mr. 10 sec, you are absolutely right about short attention span & one has to do everything it takes to succeed,a that is so not get-quick-rich scheme. It takes lot more than that. Louis, btw, it would take a lot of credibility to retain readers as well.

      Hi Chris,

      I agree totally.

It takes time, results etc to build credibility for bloggers who aimed to build a serious readers community…

      • What’s that etc? Anyways, I am completely with you. That’s why a lot of people try & fail. Since they can’t figure out that you have to rise again & start working till you succeed. It’s not just about looking like authority, but really being the one. It shows, doesn’t it?

Really a nice article on grabbing people attention immediately when they land your blog which is an important key point for a successful blog.

I HONESTLY DONT BLOG FOR MONEY, BUT IT WOULDNT HURT ME IF I OPTIMIZE IT FOR IT. IM A HOMEBOY PERSON, SO WHAT SHOULD I DO TO MY LIFE IF I DIDNT BLOG… (smile)

  7. Wookie says:

Why do you need to convince them? I guess if you have no interest in making money then yes it is important. But if you want to make money from a blog then you would rather have them click an ad then read the content of your blog.

    • Louis says:

It would be nice to have visitors to read the content and click an ad.

You are right, if the main purpose for the blog is to make money from it, yes, clicking an ad is more important.

However, I feel that building a community of like-minded people and aiming to be an Authority in your industry are more important in the long run.

I see social media such as blog as marketing or attracting tools for main business.

Of course, it would be nice to generate some income from them as well.

  8. Well, your right at certain point, to me whether is big niches or small niches, the words that you use is still the most important element in getting attention. If you did not write clearly or you use the wrong words how great your passion are, people won’t get the attention to your blog.

Remember this: The first job is not to get people to read what your blog is about or what benefit you will give. No. Your first job is to get them to see your blog.

    • Louis says:

Hi Bad Blogger, thanks for your comments.

In my view getting readers to blog is important but maybe not the first job.

For example, it is like bringing people to a new shop but the signboard and stuff inside are “half done”, people will keep guessing what this shop is selling. Next to it is another shop with a clearly written signboard, the stuff inside are neatly displayed and relevant to what’s written on the signboard.

In this case, which one would you prefer to do first? Getting people to your shop or focus on your shop?

However, this article focus more on keeping your readers on the blog and give them a reason to come back. Not so much on getting them to the blog.
