My Biggest Hurdle When I Got Started

Sorry for the late updates, got sick with flu could not stay too long at the computer :P Just got better now :) Anyway in my last post, I did a topic submission exercise and here’s one of the request from Bo Tipton.

What’s your biggest hurdle. What was the one thing after you started your business that held you back the most and what did you do to overcome it.

I did wrote about how I started in my old blog post which you can click here to read if you are interested to find out :) Anyway, I started to know about Internet Marketing only in June 2006. At that time, I got interested in it because I saw some sales copy online that claim they made thousands of dollars from selling an ebook online.

How I Started

My mentor back then was Corey Rudl and I think there are lots of marketers out there got to know Internet Marketing because of him. People like Frank Kern was also taught by him :) Sad to say he is no longer around as he died in an accident :(

I bought a home study course from Corey and until today it the only home study course I have at home. The funny thing was, my mum thought I was watching some movie :P It was from his course I decided to take action and came out my 1st product online which was a gaming book :) It took me 2 to 3 months to develop the book and I was all fired up to get myself earning thousands of dollars like what Corey was earning.

It Was A Total Disappointment

Like many others I was hoping for it to be a success as I worked real hard to create the product and market the product but I only sold 3 copies that month :( HOWEVER unlike many others I did not simply just gave up which I think is the biggest hurdle in many people. Once something fails once, you give up immediately and I think that is a major problem for many.

I Push On & Tried Harder!

I was rather happy making my first US$30 online and I knew ebook sells. The ONE THING I did that not many would do was, I went to find out what was the problem of having such a lousy outcome. The problem I found was I did not had enough traffic to my site which caused the low sales :(

My Interest In Internet Marketing Started To Grow Bigger

One thing lead to another and I forgot how it came to me but I ended up signing up for a program called Success University on the 3 or 4th month. The best part of joining that program, we had local team of people who conducted Internet Marketing classes every week for free and from there I actually took up blogging :)

My Blog Journey Started In Oct 2006

Here’s the surprisely thing, I did not start a blog because I wanted to make money out of it. I started it because my teacher said it was good to have one :P I started blogging some stuff I know about and started to share my topics with my team of downlines and I was surprised people loved my content :P

The reason I was surprised was because, I am very bad at English infact I fail my English during my younger days and yet people now are treating me as some “Guru”. Although it’s nice, but I would prefer you guys to called as a trainer then a Guru. That’s because Gurus normally don’t help people :P trainers does :) That’s that who I truly am, until today I love to help others :)

My Blog Income Started To Grow More Then My Game Ebook

I was stunted, I was making average US$50 per month from my blog while my game book only made US$20. At this moment of time I was still working and I really did not take Internet Marketing that seriously until Dec 2006 when I quit my full time job as a IT technician.

It Was The Toughest Moment Of My Life!

With only US$1800 in my bank account, I decided to focus on my blogging efforts in marketing and make some money out of it & started building a list after 6 months of marketing online.

With little money to spend, I was in a state of desperation and would do anything to make money. My blog traffic actually increased by almost 3 times when I went full time as I was spending about 6 to 8 hours each day on my blog :P

I Was At That Time A State Of Giving Up But I Hang In There

My breakthrough came when I started doing affiliate marketing in Feb or Mar 2007, I was hitting more sales as I was promoting a lot with the leads I had gathered online and made about US$300 a month. At that time it was a lot for me and it was just enough for me to eat on my own and take bus around.

So when I say I know how it feel to be poor and desperate I really understand how you feel too because I have been through it myself :)

I Knew What Was Working For Me & I Worked Upon It

I started to even work harder on getting results and soon I was hitting $500 to $600 a month from affiliate sales :) Without me knowing, I actually created a blogging system out of my experience blogging online on this blog and decided why not I create the system and sell it online :)

Atomic Blogging Was Born!

It took me about 3 months to write the  book as there were lots of screenshots to create with tutorials and I very much wanted it to be a workbook then just another ebook. I publish it online in June 2007 and it sold more then a hundred copies online hitting 4 figures for the 1st time ever :)

I realized it sold quite well not because it had great sales copy but customers loved my product and it was recommended all over the USA when you mention blogging which was nice :) Until today it’s still selling like hotcakes and I do hope to make it the No.1 blogging system in the world and that is why I put my heart and soul to make it as clear and simple as possible.

I Continued To Test The Bounties Of My Knowledge & One Shocking Thing Happen!

I know my blogging abilities and knowledge was working well for me so I did a test experiment selling one affiliate service. In just 5 days of selling through my blog and a couple of emails, I made US$3,000 in 5 days! That was really the best day of my life :)

I Never Stop Learning

Until today, I am still learning like everyone else who read my blog :) And I hope you too will have the same way of thinking too but PLEASE do not fall into the trap of just learning WITHOUT implementation that’s where 90% of people fail because of that :P

So I hope you find this story encouraging for you and if you any comments feel free to comment below :)

  2. Alvin,

Thank you for sharing your wonderful story. I like that you never gave up. Also, implementing is great advice. Some people study and prepare but never implement because they think they are not ready.

to always have the mind of a student and only do works!

You followed that to the letter. Also wanted to mention that my first online sales was for two ClickBank products, one of which was Jeff Mulligan’s CBMall and MyFreeAdSecret(which is no longer available).

RIP to Corey Rudl – he was the man and his content will be missed by the whole internet marketing community.

    Hi Alvin,

Your tenacity and clarity of purpose are most inspiring … and 8 hours a day? WOW! But of course having ditched the 9 to 5 the motivation was big time!

I am a born again newbie … having bought and taken several online courses, never to completion, I decided end of 2008 that this year I am taking IM seriously, and seriously working towards making money. Knowing what I now know, I decided that the best platform to build my IM business is with blogging, and that is where my efforts lie.

My biggest challenge is anything tech related. I had a hell of a time installing Atomic Blogging … but finally, after perhaps the fourth attempt (not all in a row), I just sat down and went step by step, and voila! It is finally installed! Now I just have to get headspace2 plugin done.

The eight hours are not possible. My no matter what daily IM chunk is two hours plus weekends. It is not because I have a 9 to 5, but I have other businesses which are providing me with income streams right now and I have to tend to them too. Ironically, I enjoy them as well. Do feel that if I want to get better results from my blogging I need to devote more time … perhaps more time to the right activity, but since I am still very much a student, the right activity includes reading and small implementations. OK…. daily blog maybe.

Alvin, you are an inspiration. I like it that you blog in English without having someone tweak it to be grammatically correct — it is your voice and your voice is strong.

Thank you for all that you do…………….

Hey Alvin, thanks for the sharing, i am guilty of it too when you mentioned at the last paragraph which i pasted above. I have bought your system for 3 months and it is still in my document folder. i have been saying to myself that i will start when i have the time! Can you share just how should i get myself to start the implementation, is half an hour a day sufficient to propel me forward? i am holding 2 jobs now thus time is really a issue for me. thanks for your sharing and i hope to hear from you.Cheers and recover soon.
