The Top 10 WordPress Plugins

I got this list of WordPress Plugins from the offical WordPress website and I thought it would be great to share it with everyone who reads my blog :)

Ranked from the most popular to the least popular, here are the top 10 WordPress plugins. Beside each listed plugin I have also comment if I have it installed on my blog.

1. All in One SEO Pack

Automatically optimizes your WordPress blog for Search Engines (Search Engine Optimization).

I personally do not use this SEO plugin but prefer to use Headspace instead

2. NextGEN Gallery

NextGEN Gallery is a full integrated Image Gallery plugin for WordPress with a Flash slideshow option.

Looks nice, I have not tried this plugin before but you may give it a shot :)

3. WP Security Scan

Scans your WordPress installation for security vulnerabilities.

Careful with this plugin, it may crush your WordPress if you are not careful.

4. Google XML Sitemaps

This plugin will create a Google sitemaps compliant XML-Sitemap of your WordPress blog.

Highly recommend plugin to be installed to help make your blog friendly with Google :)

5. Sociable

Automatically add links on your posts, pages and RSS feed to your favorite social bookmarking sites.

I dont really recommend this plugin because it created lots of unnecessary links, which will affect your rankings in search engines.

6. Google Analytics for WordPress

The Google Analytics for WordPress plugin automatically tracks and segments all outbound links from within posts, comment author links.

Highly recommended to setup to track your WordPress traffic online.

7. WP-Cumulus

WP-Cumulus displays your tags and/or categories in 3D by placing them on a rotating sphere.

No idea what is this, but you can try it out :)

8. Contact Form 7

Just another contact form plugin. Simple but flexible.

Very useful plugin to create forms on your blog, you can see a demo how it looks like on my blog at my contact form here.

9. WP Super Cache

A very fast caching engine for WordPress that produces static html files.

The last time I tried this plugin, my WordPress disappear install this with caution!

10. WP-SpamFree

Powerful anti-spam plugin that virtually eliminates comment spam. Finally, you can enjoy a spam-free WordPress blog! Includes contact form.

Personally I prefer to use Akismet, but you need more spam control you can install this too :)

    Hi Alvin,

This is a good post and a good start when it comes to plugins.
As I told you before I move with a lot of caution when it comes
to adding things to my blog that I know little or nothing about
because it can cause realy big problems. As you know I had a total
crash last year and except for lots of help I could have been in
alot of trouble. So again I say read about the plugin and what it realy does or is supposed to do and then use care.

    Stay on course,
    Rick

PS.Thanks again Alvin for allyour help.

  17. Wayne Sharer says:

    Thanks Alvin.

I happen to have tried both Heads Up and All in one Seo. I found the All in One SEO better because it didn’t let me make post descriptions that were too long. It counts for you, and lets you know when you get to 160 characters which is ideal for Google. It also made it easier for me to specify keywords for each post.

But either is good, and you should use one or the other.

    Thanks again

    Wayne Sharer

    Hi,

Thanks for the list of plug-ins which I will selectively try those that could be of help to me.

BTW, how to test them out?

I mean if it is incompatible and crash your site, then recovery could be a problem…?

Or so you have a separate test site?

I just installed Akismet and saved me a lot of time to screen thorugh the many spams I received.

I think the plugin is WP-Ban. It is a great spam blocking plugin. It will ban users by IP, IP range, host name, user agent and referer url from visiting your WordPress’s blog. It will display a custom ban message when the banned IP, IP range, host name, user agent or referer URL tries to visit you blog.

    Hi,

I’ve been having a lot of problems with Contact Form 7 not working on some websites. I’ve had to move to other form processors and even had one client get all up in my face about it, too. Test this plugin before depending on it, it can be persnickety.

I use NextGen Gallery on some sites and it can work beautifully. But I have run into some plugin incompatibilities, so again test.

I prefer Headspace, too. But I do have one blog I can’t use it on because of plugin incompatibilities.

I guess the message here is test.

  44. Hi Alvin,

Add sig – a plugin which you can put a short author bio under every post, so that readers know who you are.

Comment Approved Notifier – this is a great plugin, that will inform your reader his comment is approve by sending an email to him… good for telling your reader to revisit your site.

Nice Trackback – it will show a short nice description of the track back not like the older type… good if you use track back

Notify Users of Moderation – another great plugin which tells your reader his comment is under moderation so he don’t get confuse whether his comment is send.

Post Notification – this by far the best plugin ever created, it will automatic send an email once you post a new article to your reader WHO HAD COMMENTED ONCE IN YOUR BLOG…. How good was that…

I had been using all the plugin above and it’s great. You can go to my blog @ http://www.thebadblogger.com/ to see and try it out…
