Top 10 Mistakes In Blogging – Part 1/3

Hey guys, I am back. I still have 7 more days to complete my tiring reservist :P Just managed to catch some rest and decided to write up a post on the top 10 things you should avoid in blogging. I think this article will help lots of bloggers who are reading my blog and will benefit from this article :)

I have helped thousands of bloggers around the world to blog more effectively and I can say that there are tons and tons of mistake made by lots of people. So I am going to share with you based on what I have seen so far by all my customers and subscribers, the top 10 mistakes to avoid in blogging.

1. Avoid Black or Dark Backgrounds

Time and time again, I have seen many new bloggers when it comes to selecting a theme. They decide to select a theme that has a dark background or the text are displayed on a black or dark background.

The recommended color for a background is always a light color or white. The reason why this is so is because, many readers who view a dark background website would associate it with a hacker’s website or something that is not nice.

2. Always Space Evenly Your Article Post With Paragraphs

This may sound time to many, but I see it all the time. Where bloggers post up articles on their blog forgot to leave paragraph spacing for their articles. Let me show you an example the before and after effect:

Here’s an article without paragraph spacing

How Can Joint Ventures Build Your Business?

For instance, you got know a new person called Mr.X with 10,000 email database. You decided to work with him to do a cross promotion, he promote his database to your product and you promote his product. When this happens, both parties not only makes money but also increases the amount of subscribers database each person have :) That is exactly how those big gurus make millions of dollars in a few hours with JVs with more then 100,000 list it’s impossible not to make any $$$ :P Well my time is short, I like to share more about how you can go about to find these JV partners and how you can craft the email to invite them. If you like to find out more, I will need to see you comment on the post below what you like to know more and just hit me with a reply “yes I want to know more!” :)

You will noticed instantly the major different when you have spaces in between your articles as it will make the article be read more easily. The recommend space is to give one paragraph space every 4 sentences.

3. No Affiliate Programs Or Products Been Sold On The Blog

This is kind of a weird thing and simple thing to say but I have seen many bloggers who blog online that are trying real hard to make money online but when I see their blog. They lack of even promoting a single product on their blog.

Here’s the thing, if you do not post up products you like to promote you will never make a sale online and you will never earn money online :P So if you have yet to post any affiliate links till now, I would highly recommend you go to Clickbank and sign up for a free affilaite account and start selling products on your blog.

I am going to stop here and post the next part of article in the next post :) Mean while, you can find out what I am doing now by following my Twitter here. Hey Alvin, thanks for the post. I would like to know more on how to get JV since I find it quite hard to find JV partners. Thanks!

  4. Thanks for mentioning the dark background, Alvin! I have always wondered why people think that darker is better. I hate reading something on a dark background. I simply click away. Good tips here. Look forward to the rest.

I used to agree that dark/black backgrounds were horrible, especially on professional websites. However, I think a blog is an entirely different story. I think that a blog should reflect the bloggers personality. Black can be cool, techno, emo, whatever, and if it fits with the blog identity I think it should be done.

But it still has to be done *right* with readability in mind.

  6. Sandy says:

I have the black background to my blog. I never thought that it was a negative thing. I guess I will have to change it.

I have thought about uploading my own template to blogspot, but can you still use blogspot exactly the way they have it laid out?

  8. Footyman says:

    Totally agree with paragraphing.

I have also come across so many blogs/articles where the writer has somehow ignored/forgotten about splitting their content into paragraphs. I do get disinterested because it gradually became difficult to read.

Adding bold, colour etc to parts where you want to emphasize a point is also eye-catching. Above shows Alvin does this to good effect as well.

  9. Hi Alvin,

Great article, I am going to blog about this as well and dont worry I will trackback to this. Keep up the great content.

I have problems with point #1! That is only true if you don’t make your website aesthetically pleasing or easy on the eyes!

“Your computer uses LESS ENERGY to display black or dark colours than it takes to show white or light colours.”

That is why I use Blackle instead of Google.

Besides white backgrounds are boring because I’ve seen it on tons and tons of blogs.

  11. I blog about airsoft guns and I appreciate your suggestions about the dark backgrounds for blogs!

A person can let off steam with an airsoft gun… they can get happy!

http:// Want to read about airsoft shotting at targets with airsoft guns?

    Keep up the blogging …

  12. I’m definitely trying to avoid making 3 mistakes listed in the first part of the post.

I’m going right back to my blog to check it against the suggestions. Thank you!

I really hate blogs with dark backgrounds because they’re much harder to read and make me more tired than the blogs with a white background.

    Great article as always.

You always give so much information. One of my biggest problems when I started was trying to concentrate on too many blogs at a time. I dropped most of them for a while and then set them up one at a time.

I also agree with everyone else here. Dark backgrounds generally look terrible, but there can be exceptions.

Hope you can get a chance to check out one of my sites at How to make money without money.

Thanks so much and look forward to the rest of the articles.

  16. These are some really good tips. Anyone looking to start a blog should make sure to follow these tips.

The paragraph spacing and light background is pretty important for the look of the blog. Having anything other than a lightly colored background makes the blog hard to read.

Paragraph spacing is very very important to make sure people can actually read your blog post.

If I see a blog post that is just one block of text I often don’t read it even if I am interested in what it has to say.

Yes, do not try to make money just with Adsense. Some people have had success with it like Joel Comm. But affiliate programs are so much better and cna make you more money.

  17. Sean says:

    Alvin, you are cool man!
