5 Tips for Running a Successful StumbleUpon Ad Campaign

This post was contributed by Heather Johnson, who is an industry critic on the subject of Business Cards. She invites your feedback at heatherjohnson2323 at gmail dot com. If you wish to contribute an article do email me :)

1. Write a Stumble-Worthy Blog – The main point of a StumbleUpon campaign is to give your site a little boost for organic Stumbles. If you expose 100 targeted people to your blog and the content is good, they will likely turn their StumbleUpon friends on to the blog naturally. This will (hopefully) snowball into more traffic.

2. Start Small and Experiment – Don’t throw a lot of money into your first ad campaign with StumbleUpon. You can choose a specific Web page and targeted group for each campaign, so be sure to test things out a bit with $5 here and there. Try different ad categories and different pages on your blog to see what garners the most “thumbs up” votes.

3. Choose the Best Demographic – StumbleUpon will allow you to advertise under a certain category. There are many to choose from and you will want to select one that best fits your content and is most likely to spawn viral traffic. Also, StumbleUpon will allow you to choose a specific group of people to be directed to your site. Select a specific gender, age and location if you like.

4. Choose a Viral Page for the Ad – Don’t just point people to your blog’s homepage for the StumbleUpon campaign. Instead, choose an entry that is most likely to become viral. A helpful top 10 list, perhaps, or something completely unique.

5. Know When to Pause Your Campaign – Since StumbleUpon will just automatically start directing your target audience to your site, the money you place in your account can deplete quickly. Luckily, you can actually pause your campaign at any time before this happens. It is a good idea to pause a campaign if your site is catching on organically and has gone viral. After all, there is no need to pay for Stumbles when you start getting them naturally.
