I have been coaching people since Jan 2007 onwards and I have vast amount of experiences handling students when I conduct classes. I thought it would be great to share with you some of my real experiences on conducting training if you are considering giving some form of trainings services.
No.1 Myth In Training - Not Every Student Will Be Successful & Willing To Work
It’s a real sad fact, that out of every 100 students that you coach regardless what you teach only 1 to 2% of them will be willing to do the work. That is the reason at most times, you do not see students are all successful in courses. The problem most times do not lies on the trainer but most times is the student.
So just a word of caution do not expect your students to work all that hard for their own success even thought you put all the hard work to support them. The success rate for any course is normally only 1%.
People Take Your Services For Granted If You Are Too Nice
It’s really a weird reality when at most times, trainers who do not give real good training and followups always tend to get more attention compared to trainers who are really concern for students.
Here’s what happen during my trainings, I would normally go the extra mile to conduct private one on one coaching with students out of my spare time. But what I realized later on, most students will take for granted the service I provide which I do not charge at all and worst case some of them even got the guts to ask for refund even thought they know themselves they did not do anything
So the trick here is try not to be too nice to your customers, they may take your services for granted. One way to make them value your time, always explain to them that this private session actually cost $XXX.
Customers Are Hard To Please, Especially Those That Refuse To Do Anything But Just Complain
In my experience, I have suffered two cases of this and I can tell you it really break me to tears that I spend so much time preparing quality materials but people just simply take it for granted.
People who refused to do anything are the most scary students of all. For this breed of people, it always advisable to ensure they sign documents to ensure they have seen all the documents and trainings needed or they will claimed they did not go but actually they did ( yes it happens and they will later ask for refunds but actually they are just pretending to find a reason for refund ).
Things I Do To Solve This Problems
First thing I would do is make it very CLEAR to your students what they have done and what they should do to get the result they want. Most often, students will not realized they did nothing or were plain lazy to do it and blame it all on the trainer.
Once they realized the problem, you will need to advise them to TAKE ACTION which is important. I used to spoon feed my students a lot to a point, they totally did not want to do anything at all (it’s quite frastrating at times)
Conducting Training Requires Lots Of Patience
Regardless how newbie a student can be, always learn to be patience with them and do not bare anger on them. Just remember a happy customer for you means more referrals for you
I hope this article will at least give you some heads up on how it really feels to conduct trainings. To be frank, I was just pissed off today with one of student and just wanted to write this article out hehe ![]()
